Cellulite and pregnant

Cellulite can occur at any point in life from puberty and forward. And for about 9 out of 10 women it will turn up at some point in life. However, there are periods in life that are normally coinciding with cellulite, the most commonly known are during pregnancy or around the menopause.

A lot of women will have some form of cellulite already from an early age, that shows when the skin is compressed or squeezed. This usually occurs on thighs, buttocks and the lower abdomen, where a woman has higher amounts of subcutaneous fat.

Connection between cellulite and pregnancy
During a pregnancy the body will go through significant changes. An innocuous but cosmetically disturbing fact is that it is very common for women to develop cellulite during or after the pregnancy.

It may seem like quite an enigma, why you suddenly develop cellulite during the pregnancy, especially if it was not present beforehand. Why it starts appearing is not yet completely explained, however there are a few likely causes to be found.

  • One of the most likely causes is that changes in the hormonal balance is a major contributor to its appearance
  • That the subcutaneous fat increase during a pregnancy gives an increased risk of developing cellulite as well as making it more visible
  • Other explanations regard genetic factors that can increase the chances of developing cellulite or that the problems become apparent

Preventive measures
Your diet and lifestyle before and during pregnancy are great factors in preventing it. Too high intake of carbohydrates, fat or salt is not advisable. Smoking will often contribute to an increase problem with cellulite.

The best tips for prevention before pregnancy is to follow a healthy diet with loads of fibre and vegetables. Lean meats such as poultry is preferable to other types of meat. Fish should be part of the diet, most of all oily fish.

Regular exercise keeps the body in shape as well as the subcutaneous fat on a healthy level. Doing exercise of various degrees may even be combined with a fat burning supplement when you need quick means against cellulite.

During pregnancy it is important to really try to eat healthy and do some regular light exercise – this should be your goal.

Active treatments
In addition to measures such as a healthy diet and lifestyle, there are lotions and anti-cellulite treatments available to complement them. This reduces cellulite and makes it less visible.
